Professional Mentor: My professional mentor was Miss Olivia Becker, a second-grade teacher at Rita Murphy Elementary School. Through this mentorship, I was able to learn about a project-based learning classroom and student behaviors and management strategies. I was able to spend a half day in Miss Becker's classroom, attending a behavior meeting and helping out around the classroom. I had the opportunity to attend an IEP meeting, where I was able to experience the way that the many people involved collaborated together to do what is best for the student. I was given the opportunity to view how an IEP is made and decided upon. Through our discussions about PBL classrooms, I was able to determine that this is a great idea to incorporate into my classroom. Miss Becker shared her experiences with behaviors and what she did to help the students improve her behaviors, which gave me insight on how to help my students with their behaviors. I had the opportunity to watch the teachers collaborate to create the student's behavior management chart. Faculty Mentor: My faculty mentor was Dr. Michael Taylor, the Coordinator of the Catholic Educator Graduate Certificate Program. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to travel abroad to Ireland with Dr. Taylor. Through this experience, I was able to learn about teaching abroad, as well as learn about why servant leadership is so important. Dr. Taylor became my mentor in the late Fall of 2018. Through the mentorship with Dr. Taylor, we both reflected on our Ireland trip, beginning to understand how it is truly impacting my future career. I was able to speak about my testimony at Chapel of The Word and speak about the trip during Convocation in early February. I was humbled by both of these experiences. Dr. Taylor also walked me through the best ways that I am able to continue to be involved over the summer, which included a trip or two to Saint Bernard Mission School. Dr. Taylor has taught me that servant leadership is the most humbling experience and has impacted the type of educator I am becoming.
